In late December 2008 we packed up our house in Leiden and headed for Pauline and John's in Lasalle, France for Christmas. We decided to make a road trip of it, and took our time on the way including stopping for a night in Dijon, the capital of the Burgundy region. It was our first visit to that beautiful French city: it was sparkling that day, decked out in Christmas lights, but it was attractive enough without them. The food and wine were obviously amazing, although as the boys were still so young and needed to be fed by 6pm, I think we missed the best of it. We vowed to go back and explore the region sometime - it's still on the bucket list.

We had time to do some shopping in Dijon where I picked up these earrings at the local Galleries Lafayette. They're big and twinkly, ideal for Christmas day, which is when they got their first outing. I found one photo of me wearing them, in Pauline and John's wonderful dining room, sitting next to Pete over Christmas dinner. Suzie's earrings look pretty amazing, judging by this photo.
Today started with a relaxing sleep in and the delivery of some furniture we hope will help bring some order to our lounge room. Rob, Molly, Angus and I headed out for our walk, then I baked a cheesecake for the belated birthday dinner for Rob and and Paul tonight. I spent sometime working this afternoon trying desperately to finish this overdue paper. The swelling remains and makes me slow and sluggish. I'm really, truly sick of it.

Rob and Paul: the May birthday boys |
We had a lovely evening back at Paul and Geets celebrating the birthdays. Lots of delicious Italian style food, and great company including the Thompsons and Linz and Chris and Arlene who joined us for the fun. It was a happy night and a great distraction for me.
