Day 133: Virginia's Elongated Drops

On my 40th birthday we were living in a house in Leichhardt owned by our friend, Virginia Lloyd. Virginia was weaved into the golden web through our dear friend Jen Flemming (Day 46). About the time Virginia was heading to NYC to take up a green card, Rob and I were looking to leave our happy abode in Potts Point to accommodate our growing family. James was then three and Angus was on the way. It suited Virginia to have us rent her lovely house for 18 months, and suited us to have a bigger place and test out a part of town where we thought we might settle permanently. I remember when we took James over to see the house, he walked outside to the pretty garden and asked Rob, 'is this called a backyard?' It confirmed our need to move from our apartment! We spent lots of time in the garden.

Angus with his Anna

It became a special house for us; it was Angus' first home and where he was looked after by the precious Anna (Day 8) when I went back to work (in the back room) or needed to nap after a sleepless night thanks to our restless baby; I'm forever grateful! All the little cousins played happily together there on many occasions. James spent 90 per cent of his time at this age wearing dress ups, and took the role playing very seriously. One morning I woke him up after he'd slept in his superman costume and said "Hello James", as he opened his eyes he replied "It's Clarke Kent to you"!

Virginia in her Leichhardt ho
Before to moving to New York, Virginia had just published an incredibly moving memoir The Young Widow's Book of Home Improvement based on her experience of nursing her beloved John through his struggle with cancer and eventual death. It was a groundbreaking book that was received to great acclaim. I'm looking forward to the release of Virginia's new book next year, Girls at the Piano. Virginia's back from New York now with her partner Nate and their gorgeous daughter Hazel. She recently sent me such a kind message of good wishes and support.

Lovely Lindy and me, 40th party
I had my 40th party in the back garden of the Leichhardt house (I was as puffed up then, post pregnancy, as I am now!).  It turned out Virginia was in Sydney at the time, so we invited her to her house to join in the fun. It must have been a surreal experience for her, but she graciously accepted the invitation and arrived with these gorgeous earrings as a gift. Again, they are more suited to evening than day wear, but I enjoyed wearing them today.

On Day 133 I woke feeling miserable - tired after a restless night and still as swollen and stiff as ever. News from London of further terrorist attacks only added to my sense of misery.  Opening my email I was cheered to get a message from Pauline telling me about her memories of dancing to Little Pattie's Maroubra Stomp and more and photos of their gorgeous peonies in London and Lasalle. Living in London, she and John must feel the anxiety and fear very close. A lovely morning walk made me grateful for our peaceful neighbourhood and lifted my mood. I finished my paper this afternoon - phew!  Another week begins.
