After a deluge over night it was lovely to wake up to sunny skies and get out for an early morning walk. Everything was still soaking but looking so fresh and green. I arrived home to a delivery of a stunning pair of earrings from a wonderful gang of friends and colleagues - Karen, Laurel, Susan, and Claire from the US, Canada and the UK respectively. I can't wait to reveal them here soon. It gave me a real boost to know that even thought I'm so far away, and feeling disconnected from work in so many ways, my lovely overseas colleagues are thinking of me. That they have exquisite taste is an added bonus! As Karen wrote to me today, "perhaps we should all be sending earrings to each other during major life events, to lay down a history of friendship" - I think she's absolutely right! I am so grateful to be part of such a wonderful international feminist scholarly community.
It's been a quiet day at home with Robbie today. I'm attempting to some work, but the chemobrain seems to have well and truly kicked in. I can concentrate for about 5 minutes then wander off to look at the website of the designer of my new earrings (Leah Alexander if you're interested!), check facebook, write emails...actually, this isn't really different from my usual work practices, but right now I'm finding it almost impossible to snap back into focus on the important stuff.
The highlight of Day 51 was having my darling Mother-in-law Betty and her dear friend Marg come for a lovely roast dinner cooked by Robbie. The caught the train from Armidale today and are en route to New Zealand for a fabulous holiday to celebrate Betty's 80th birthday. I wrote about Betty early on (Day 5); she really is the kindest and most thoughtful mother in law I could ever have wished for. She's been keeping close and loving tabs on me, while also managing other stressful family health issues in Armidale. I know it's hard for her to stand by and not be able to do much practically, but her care and concern are forever present. The earrings I'm wearing were a birthday gift from Betty in 2011. They are such an interesting design, with what looks like a light blue iris, framed by a dark blue surround. The look heavy, but are actually very light and a pleasure to wear. Another day down.
